General Abdulsalami Abubakar Warns Nigerian Government on Worsening Economic Hardship

Former Nigerian military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation in the country, urging the government to take swift action. Speaking at his residence in Minna during a birthday visit from the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, General Abubakar emphasized that the nation's hardship is escalating beyond control.

"The hardship in the land is getting out of control," he said, noting that Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities like food, transportation, and education. He pointed to rising fuel prices, increased school fees, and a general lack of funds as factors making life difficult for citizens.

General Abdulsalami called on the federal, state, and local governments to implement measures to ease the economic strain on Nigerians. He revealed that he is part of a group that has submitted proposals to the government, suggesting long-term solutions beyond temporary palliatives.

"We have recommended that providing palliatives is not the answer," he explained. Instead, he urged the government to flood the market with food at affordable prices, allowing people to buy essentials within their income levels. He expressed hope that the government would consider and act on these recommendations to address the economic challenges facing the nation.
