On Sunday, Israel launched a series of airstrikes targeting Houthi positions in Yemen, while continuing its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. These strikes come amid escalating tensions in the region and could further contribute to a wider conflict involving multiple fronts.
The Israeli air assault on the port city of Hodeidah involved numerous aircraft and focused on fuel facilities, power plants, and docks at the Ras Issa and Hodeidah ports. This operation is considered one of the largest in recent months. According to Houthi media, the attacks resulted in four fatalities and 33 injuries, causing power outages throughout Hodeidah. The Israeli military stated that the strikes aimed to disrupt the Houthis, an Iranian-backed group that has been firing missiles at Israeli targets in support of Palestine.
The assaults in Yemen follow a recent operation that led to the death of Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s longstanding leader, in Beirut. His death has significantly impacted Hezbollah, which has vowed to continue its resistance against Israel.
In Lebanon, airstrikes targeted various locations, resulting in at least 105 deaths and over 359 injuries since Israel intensified its bombardments last week. On Sunday alone, Lebanese officials reported 24 deaths and 29 injuries from an Israeli strike near Sidon and additional casualties from strikes in Baalbek and Joub Jenin.
The Israeli military claims its air force hit several important Hezbollah targets, including weapon launchers and storage sites. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has retaliated by launching attacks against Israeli positions, further heightening tensions.
The recent violence has led to widespread displacement, with over 200,000 people forced to leave their homes in Lebanon, and many fleeing to Syria. As the situation continues to unfold, calls for a ceasefire from international leaders are growing louder, but diplomatic efforts remain largely unfruitful.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Nasrallah's killing as a crucial step in shifting the power dynamics in the region, while the White House urged for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflicts.
