JD Vance has shared insights into a phone call he received from Donald Trump shortly after the former president survived a second assassination attempt on Sunday.
Vance, who is running for Vice President alongside Trump in the upcoming US election, recounted the conversation during a Faith and Freedom Coalition event in Georgia. The incident occurred when Secret Service agents noticed a rifle barrel poking through the chainlink fence of Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. The gunman, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted aiming the rifle but fled after agents fired at him.
Routh was later arrested on Interstate 95, about 40 miles from the scene. He faces federal gun charges and may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Earlier in the summer, Trump was targeted in a similar assassination attempt during a campaign event. The suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by agents at the scene.
In the phone call, Vance revealed that Trump informed him about the attack, saying, “JD, you’re not going to believe this, but they tried to do it again.” Vance, initially skeptical, quickly learned from Trump that the assailant had tried to kill him while he was on the golf course.
Despite the serious nature of the event, Trump reportedly remained in good spirits, expressing frustration that he was unable to complete his birdie putt due to the interruption.
