Kamala Harris is set to hold a rally in Las Vegas on Sunday, underscoring Nevada's growing importance in the upcoming presidential election. With six electoral votes at stake, both Harris and Donald Trump have made multiple visits to the state, as polls suggest a tight race.
Harris’s visit comes shortly after her trip to the US-Mexico border in Arizona, where she discussed illegal immigration and drug trafficking, two issues that have been focal points for Democrats. At a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, Trump criticized Harris, accusing her of wanting to legalize fentanyl, connecting the opioid crisis to her stance on border security. Polls show that six out of ten Americans view immigration as a critical issue, with many favoring Trump’s handling of the matter over Harris's approach.
Harris's campaign is also focusing on appealing to younger voters, particularly in Las Vegas, with messaging around economic issues such as “Trump’s tequila tax,” which could result from his proposed tariffs. Both Harris and Trump have promised to eliminate taxes on tips, an important issue in Las Vegas, home to about 60,000 hospitality workers. Harris's support has been bolstered by Nevada’s Culinary Union, which endorsed her proposal to address sub-minimum wage concerns.
As the election remains tightly contested, Harris acknowledged that the race is "as close as it could possibly be," positioning herself as the underdog.
