The much-anticipated merger between Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso to form a united opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may not materialize. This became evident following recent comments by Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last election, who expressed his confidence in winning the 2027 presidential race.
Kwankwaso made these remarks while inaugurating the NNPP secretariat in Katsina State. During the visit, which also included a condolence stop at the Yar’Adua family home following the passing of Hajiya Dada, mother of late President Umaru Yar’Adua, Kwankwaso boldly stated that his party was ready to secure the presidency and other positions in 2027.
He also took a jab at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring it "dead" and criticizing its current direction, claiming his departure from the party signaled its decline.
Earlier discussions had hinted at a potential alliance between Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso to challenge the APC in the next elections. However, Kwankwaso’s recent statements suggest he remains focused on his individual ambitions.
Meanwhile, PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that talks about a possible collaboration between the three leaders were still ongoing. However, Kwankwaso’s recent assertion may complicate these efforts, as he appears determined to lead the opposition himself.
In contrast, Peter Obi has indicated that while he is not desperate for the presidency, he remains open to alliances aimed at improving Nigeria. His priority, he said, is working with people who can bring meaningful change to the country, not simply winning elections.
Political analysts and party insiders remain divided over the feasibility of a united front between the three leaders, with some expressing doubts about Kwankwaso’s willingness to concede leadership to Atiku or Obi. As the 2027 election approaches, the political landscape remains uncertain, with various factors likely to influence any potential alliances.
