Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an automobile spare parts dealer, Ejiofor Chiwuzie, for attempting to export consignments of heroin and loud, a type of cannabis, from Lagos.
The arrest was announced in a statement by Mr. Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, on Sunday in Abuja. He revealed that the drugs were intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, concealed within LED rechargeable lamps and sofa metal legs intended for export.
Ejiofor was apprehended on Tuesday, September 24, at the Trade Fair complex in the Ojo area of Lagos, where he sells spare parts. His cargo, which contained automobile parts, lamps, sofa legs, and electronics, was being shipped to Liberia.
Inside the LED lamps and sofa legs, officers discovered 37 parcels of heroin weighing 1.10 kilograms and four blocks of loud totaling 1.20 kilograms. The operation also led to the arrest of two freight agents involved in the shipment.
In addition to this arrest, the NDLEA foiled attempts by drug trafficking networks to export various drugs, including loud, tramadol pills, co-codamol tablets, pentazocine injections, dihydrocodeine, and promethazine tablets through courier companies. These consignments were destined for several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Thailand, and Oman.
Babafemi noted that NDLEA officers from the Directorate of Operation and General Investigation intercepted the shipments. Among the seizures were 2.3 kilograms of loud intended for Thailand, tramadol concealed in footwear going to Oman, and pentazocine injections bound for the United States. Additional drugs were also intercepted, including 200 co-codamol pills meant for Australia and various other medications concealed in footwear en route to the UK.
All these operations occurred between September 23 and September 24 in Lagos.
