Nicki Minaj recently shared that despite paying "millions" in taxes, she still isn’t a U.S. citizen. During a TikTok Live session with a fan earlier this week, the rapper revealed her surprising immigration status, explaining that she’s lived in the U.S. since childhood but has not been granted citizenship.
Nicki, originally from Trinidad & Tobago, moved to the United States as an undocumented immigrant when she was just five years old. Although she has spent most of her life in the country and has paid substantial taxes, she hasn’t been given official citizenship. “I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” she said during the session.
Minaj previously shared her immigration story in 2018, when she criticized the Trump administration’s harsh policies at the U.S.-Mexico border, which led to the separation of migrant children from their parents. Reflecting on her experience as a child immigrant, she expressed empathy for those children, saying, "I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5."
Despite her success and financial contributions to the country, Nicki finds it surprising that she hasn’t been granted any form of honorary citizenship. She joked, “With the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country, you would think I would have been given an honorary citizenship many years ago.”
Her story has brought attention to the complexities of immigration and citizenship, especially for individuals who have lived and contributed to the U.S. for most of their lives.
