Nigerian petroleum marketers have called on Dangote Refinery to publicly disclose the price of its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, amid claims that its prices are lower than imported fuel.
In separate interviews, the President of the Products Retail Outlets Owners Association, Billy Gillis-Harry, and the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Abubakar Maigandi, addressed statements made by Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited. Edwin had suggested that local marketers were avoiding Dangote Refinery's petrol in favor of imported fuel, despite the refinery’s reportedly lower prices.
Gillis-Harry, however, clarified that marketers have not yet been informed of the official price of Dangote Refinery’s petrol, making it difficult for them to decide. He emphasized that marketers are open to purchasing from the refinery, provided the pricing is fair.
"We are willing to partner with Dangote Refinery, but we need transparency. We still don't know the actual price of their petrol, despite claims it is cheaper than imported alternatives," said Gillis-Harry.
Similarly, Maigandi noted that local marketers have no intention of boycotting Dangote Refinery’s fuel but reiterated the need for clarity on the price.
"We are ready to buy petrol from Dangote Refinery if the price is competitive. However, we don’t know how much they are selling it for yet," Maigandi stated, adding that marketers purchase fuel at varying prices depending on their location.
Earlier in September, Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, announced the release of his refinery’s petrol. He said that the price would be determined by the Federal Executive Council, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Marketers await further details on the pricing to make informed decisions on partnering with Dangote Refinery.
