Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, is facing scrutiny over a CNN report revealing controversial statements he allegedly made on a pornographic website’s message board. The posts, dating from 2008 to 2012, feature Robinson, who is also North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, making inflammatory remarks, including references to enjoying transgender pornography and expressing support for reinstating slavery.
The CNN report claims Robinson used the pseudonym “minisoldr” on the site "Nude Africa," where he allegedly described himself in derogatory terms and expressed extreme views, such as wishing for slavery to be reinstated and making a comparison to Hitler over U.S. political figures.
Robinson, the state’s first Black lieutenant governor, is currently running against Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein in the November election. With the deadline for withdrawing from the race having passed, Robinson's campaign has faced calls for his exit from the race amid the scandal.
In response to the report, Robinson has strongly denied the accusations, attributing the leak to his political opponent and describing the situation as a smear campaign. He compared the situation to the “high-tech lynching” of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and vowed to remain in the race, focusing on substantive issues rather than what he calls “salacious tabloid trash.”
Robinson’s campaign has been marked by previous controversies, including statements on COVID-19, transgender issues, and homosexuality. Recent polls show him trailing behind Stein, and he has reportedly been sidelined by the Trump campaign, which had previously endorsed him.
The CNN report also highlights other offensive comments attributed to Robinson, including disparaging remarks about civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Robinson's campaign continues to face challenges as it seeks to address the fallout from these allegations.
