Mark Robinson, the Republican lieutenant governor of North Carolina and current gubernatorial candidate, sustained burns on Friday night while attending a truck show in Mount Airy. The incident occurred during his campaign stop at the Mayberry Truck Show, according to his campaign spokesperson, Mike Lonergan.
Robinson was treated at Northern Regional Hospital for second-degree burns. Despite the injury, Lonergan assured the public that Robinson was in good spirits and planned to resume his campaign schedule as planned on Saturday.
Details about the exact cause and location of the burns were not immediately provided. Earlier on Friday, Robinson had been making campaign stops with Moore County Republicans and had four more events scheduled for Saturday.
Robinson, who has served as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor since 2021, is running for governor against Democratic nominee Josh Stein, the current attorney general. Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is barred from running for re-election due to term limits.
Recently, Robinson’s campaign faced challenges after a CNN report from September 19 alleged that he posted offensive racial and sexual comments online more than a decade ago. The fallout from the report led to the resignation of a dozen staff members from his campaign and the lieutenant governor’s office. Robinson has denied writing the posts and hired a law firm to investigate the matter.
The truck show took place in Mount Airy, a town known for being the hometown of the late TV star Andy Griffith. The town is widely recognized as the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry in The Andy Griffith Show, a 1960s television classic.
Despite the controversy surrounding him, Robinson continues his bid for the governor’s seat as the election approaches.
