In southern Pakistan, police have shot and killed a man suspected of blasphemy during an alleged shootout, marking the second such incident in a week. The victim, Shah Nawaz, a doctor from Umerkot in Sindh province, had been accused of insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad and sharing blasphemous material on social media. He had been in hiding before the incident.
According to local police chief Niaz Khoso, Nawaz was killed on Wednesday night in Mirpur Khas when officers attempted to stop two men on a motorcycle. The men reportedly opened fire and attempted to escape, leading police to shoot back. One suspect managed to flee, while Nawaz was killed. It was only after the shootout that police realized Nawaz was the individual they had been searching for.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions. Videos on social media show local clerics praising the police and celebrating Nawaz's death. However, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has condemned the killing, expressing deep concern over what it calls "extrajudicial killings" and demanding an independent investigation.
This incident follows a similar case in Quetta last week, where an officer fatally shot a blasphemy suspect, Syed Khan, inside a police station. Khan had been rescued from a mob before his death. The officer involved was arrested but later pardoned by Khan’s family.
Blasphemy-related violence is common in Pakistan, often involving mob attacks. Killings by police, however, are rare. The country’s controversial blasphemy laws carry severe penalties, including the death sentence, though such sentences have not yet been carried out.
In recent years, there has been a rise in violence against blasphemy suspects, with mobs attacking and killing accused individuals. The HRCP and other human rights groups have called for greater accountability and protection for those accused of blasphemy in Pakistan.
