An 80-year-old model from South Korea has captured the spotlight as the oldest contestant in the Miss Universe Korea pageant, competing against women young enough to be her grandchildren. Choi Soon-hwa is determined to demonstrate that grace, beauty, and determination transcend age.
In an interview with CNN ahead of the pageant's grand finale, Choi expressed her ambition to “stun the world” and spark curiosity about her health and vitality. “People will ask, ‘How is an 80-year-old so healthy? How did she maintain that body? What’s her secret?’” she stated, showcasing her confidence and charisma with her striking silver hair.
Choi believes that beauty is not only about appearances but also about mental well-being and respect for others. “Looking beautiful on the outside is important, but you need to be at ease in your mind as well,” she noted. “Also, you need to be a positive thinker. So many people are negative these days.”
Having been born nearly a decade before the inaugural Miss Universe pageant in 1952, Choi aimed to make history by clinching the title and securing a spot to represent South Korea at the international competition in Mexico City this November. However, the crown ultimately went to Kim Chae-won, who was crowned Miss Universe Korea on September 24.
This year's pageant marks a significant shift for the Miss Universe organization, as it has lifted age restrictions for the first time, allowing women of all ages to participate. This decision follows last year's removal of bans on pregnant, married, and divorced contestants, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity.
Choi, who began her modeling career at the age of 72 to address financial challenges, viewed the lifting of age restrictions as an opportunity. “When the rule changed, I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot? Whether I win or not, this is my chance to make a statement,’” she shared. Her participation has inspired many to believe that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
