Barack Obama Challenges Donald Trump’s Competence at Kamala Harris Rally in Arizona

Former President Barack Obama raised questions about Donald Trump’s fitness for office during a campaign rally for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Tucson, Arizona. At the event on Friday, Obama criticized Trump’s ability to serve a second term, a theme that has gained traction among Democratic campaigners recently.

“Along with his intentions, there is also a question of his competence. Have you seen him lately?” Obama asked the crowd. “He is out there giving two, two-and-a-half hour speeches, just word salads. You have no idea what he’s talking about.”

As Trump, now the oldest presidential candidate in U.S. history, continues his campaign, Democrats have begun to highlight concerns about his age and mental acuity. This shift in strategy comes after President Joe Biden, who is 81, suspended his re-election campaign in July, paving the way for Harris, 59, to take the lead on the Democratic ticket.

Democratic candidates have seized on recent events where Trump appeared uncertain, suggesting that his struggles on the campaign trail may indicate he is unfit for the presidency. “If he can’t handle the rigors of the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job?” Harris questioned during a rally in Michigan, emphasizing the urgency of their message.

Harris, along with Obama and other allies, aims to galvanize voters in key swing states like Arizona and Michigan, which play a critical role in determining the outcome of the presidential election. Polls indicate a tight race, with Trump leading by about two points in Arizona, while Harris is slightly ahead in Michigan.

Democrats have consistently depicted Trump as a dangerous figure, referencing his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election through unfounded claims of a “rigged” system and his calls for military tribunals against political opponents. “Tucson, we do not need to see what an older, loonier Donald Trump looks like with no guardrails,” Obama declared, rallying support against the former president.
