House of Representatives Rejects National Honor for Speaker Tajudeen Abbas

The House of Representatives has rejected the National Honor awarded to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, claiming discrimination by President Bola Tinubu, who conferred a higher honor on Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu announced that Akpabio and Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere Ekun would receive the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), while Abbas and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau were awarded the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

In response, Representative Philip Agbese moved a motion of urgent public importance on Wednesday, leading the House to assert that the Reps are not inferior to Senators. The motion, supported by 360 members, called for abolishing the distinction between the “upper chamber” and the “lower chamber,” emphasizing that both legislative bodies should be treated equally.
