A 34-year-old man from Gamba Village in Hwange, Zimbabwe, has been fined $150 after threatening to kill a fellow villager for refusing to marry off his daughter. The accused, Irvine Shoko, appeared before the Hwange Magistrates Court, facing charges of issuing death threats and possessing a prohibited weapon.
Shoko was given the option to either pay the fine or serve a three-month prison sentence. Additionally, the court imposed a three-month suspended sentence, which will remain in effect for five years. If Shoko commits a similar offense within that period, the suspended sentence will be enforced.
The court heard that the incident took place on the night of June 6 at approximately 10 p.m., when Shoko visited the homestead of fellow villager Possent Nyathi. During the visit, Shoko demanded Nyathi’s daughter’s hand in marriage, but Nyathi refused, leading to a heated argument. In response, Shoko allegedly threatened to kill Nyathi, who then reported the matter to the police.
Upon Shoko’s arrest, authorities discovered he was carrying an okapi knife, which is considered a prohibited weapon under Zimbabwean law. The combination of his threats and possession of the illegal weapon led to his conviction.
The National Prosecuting Authority underscored the severity of Shoko’s actions, while the court expressed hope that the sentence would deter similar criminal behavior in the future.
