The late Hollywood actor John Amos, known for his roles in Roots and Good Times, reportedly requested that the announcement of his death be delayed, fearing his daughter would turn the event into a “circus,” according to his longtime publicist, Belinda Foster.
Amos’ passing, which occurred over 40 days ago at the age of 84 from congestive heart failure, was made public by his son, Kelly Christopher Amos (K.C.), in an Instagram post on October 1. However, his daughter Shannon Amos claimed she learned about her father’s death through media reports, sparking tension within the family.
In the aftermath, a statement from Amos’ goddaughter, Amy Gaudy, on behalf of Shannon and other relatives, accused K.C. and Foster of isolating the actor during his final months. They also suggested K.C. and Foster may have exploited Amos’ vulnerability as an elder.
Foster has since denied these accusations, stating that she had represented Amos for over 30 years and considered him a father figure. She emphasized that Amos had a strained relationship with his daughter and refuted claims of elder abuse against K.C. According to Foster, law enforcement had previously investigated Shannon’s claims and confirmed Amos’ well-being.
Foster further explained that K.C. was under a court-ordered no-contact restriction with Shannon, which prevented him from informing her directly of their father’s passing. She also noted that it was Amos himself who requested the delay in notifying Shannon and the public about his death.
The family’s dispute comes at a time of mourning, with Shannon’s side alleging possible neglect during Amos’ final days, while Foster and K.C. have maintained their innocence. Despite the family conflict, Foster expressed her desire to preserve Amos’ legacy as a celebrated actor and community activist, urging for an end to what she called “nonsensical claims” driven by Shannon’s estrangement from her father.
The feud has added a layer of tension to the family’s grieving process, overshadowing the commemoration of Amos’ life and career.
