Vice President Kamala Harris has issued a strong denunciation of former President Donald Trump, accusing him of aspiring to "unchecked power" and comparing his behavior to fascism. This statement comes after reports surfaced regarding Trump’s admiration for Adolf Hitler's military generals, as relayed by his former Chief of Staff, John Kelly.
During an unexpected address from her Washington, D.C. residence on Wednesday, Harris expressed concern over Trump's desire for a military that would pledge loyalty to him personally, rather than to the U.S. Constitution. "Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable," Harris stated, adding that in a second term, Trump would have no "guardrails" like Kelly to restrain his impulses.
According to Kelly's recollection, Trump had lamented that he did not have generals who displayed the same loyalty to him as those who served Hitler in Nazi Germany. Harris emphasized that this type of loyalty is a dangerous prospect for the future of American democracy. "He wants a military that will obey his orders, even if it means breaking the law or violating their oath to the Constitution," she said.
As the November 5th presidential election nears, Harris framed the decision for voters starkly: "We know what Donald Trump wants. The question is: What do the American people want?"
Earlier in the day, Republican pollster Frank Luntz commented on Harris’s message, noting that her arguments about why she should be elected resonated with voters. However, when she shifted focus to attacking Trump, voter enthusiasm appeared to stall, according to Luntz.
Harris's concerns align with sentiments shared by others who have worked with Trump. General Mark Milley, former Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had previously labeled Trump "a total fascist" in a book by journalist Bob Woodward.
As the election draws closer, Harris also acknowledged the possibility that Trump could prematurely declare victory before all votes are counted. She reassured the public that her campaign is prepared to handle any challenges following election night.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed on Wednesday that President Joe Biden shares Harris's views, agreeing with those who describe Trump as a fascist. She highlighted Trump's own statements about his intentions if re-elected, warning that "we cannot ignore or forget what happened on January 6, 2021."
