Meta Faces Scrutiny Over Handling of Anti-Immigration Content, Oversight Board Launches Investigation

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is under investigation by its independent Oversight Board for its handling of anti-immigration content on Facebook. The board is probing Meta’s decision to allow controversial posts to remain on its platform despite receiving a high number of complaints regarding anti-immigrant views.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt, co-chair of the board and former Danish Prime Minister, emphasized the importance of balancing free speech with protecting vulnerable communities. She highlighted the frequent appeals from users across the EU concerning immigration-related content, noting that this signals "serious questions" about how Meta addresses such issues, including the use of coded language.

One case under investigation involves a meme from a Facebook page linked to Poland's far-right Confederation party. The post depicts an image of Donald Tusk, Poland's Prime Minister, accompanied by a derogatory reference to immigrants. The second case involves an AI-generated image posted on a German page, featuring a woman with a stop sign, urging against immigration, with offensive language directed at immigrants.

The Oversight Board's review will also assess Meta’s hate speech policies, which aim to protect refugees and immigrants while allowing debate on immigration policies. The board’s decisions are binding, making this investigation a significant moment for Meta’s content moderation strategies.
