Mikel Obi Pays Tribute to Claude Makelele as His Greatest Mentor

Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has honored his ex-Chelsea teammate Claude Makelele, calling him his greatest mentor in a heartfelt tribute. The two players were part of the Chelsea squad under Portuguese coach José Mourinho, with Makelele joining the club in 2003 and Mikel following in 2006.

Makelele quickly established himself as a key figure at Chelsea, renowned for his exceptional defensive abilities that redefined the role of a defensive midfielder. Mikel, who became known for his passing skills and defensive contributions, credited Makelele with having a profound impact on his career.

In a recent episode of his podcast, "The Obi One Podcast," Mikel expressed his admiration for Makelele, saying, "My mentor, my idol in my position that I played. For me, he is the greatest that has ever played in that position. You must be doing something right if you have a position named after you."

Mikel emphasized Makelele's pivotal role in Chelsea's success during their time together, stating, "He was integral in every game for Chelsea. Without him, the midfield wouldn't stand."

During his impressive 11-year tenure at Chelsea, Mikel Obi won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the prestigious 2011–12 Champions League.
