Parents Demand Justice for Youths Arrested During #EndBadGovernance Protests

Parents of youths detained during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests have gathered at the Kano State House of Assembly, demanding justice and the immediate release of their children. Malam Nura Ahmad, speaking on behalf of the group, revealed that around 70 young people were arrested during the protests and transferred to Abuja, where they are reportedly enduring harsh conditions.

The protests, held nationwide between August 1 and 10, were organized to express discontent with the hardship many Nigerians are facing under President Bola Tinubu's administration. Ahmad raised concerns about the inhumane treatment of the detainees, stating that they have not been allowed to bathe since their arrest and are only being provided with one meal a day.

The parents also voiced frustration over the lack of progress in securing bail for their children, saying that all efforts have been obstructed. Additionally, they revealed that the youths have been denied access to legal representation, which has heightened their distress.

Fatima Yusuf Umar, one of the mothers, shared her anguish, recounting a conversation with her son, who told her he was struggling to see properly due to the brutal treatment he had endured while in detention.

In response to the parents’ concerns, the Majority Leader of the State Assembly assured them that steps would be taken to facilitate bail for the youths. He also urged the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to intervene and ensure that the detainees are granted bail, bringing relief to the worried families.
