Vice President Shettima Cancels Trip to Commonwealth Summit After Plane Incident at JFK Airport

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has canceled his scheduled trip to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Samoa after his plane was damaged during a stopover at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.

President Bola Tinubu had initially delegated Shettima to represent the country at the ongoing summit. However, according to a statement released on Thursday night, October 24, by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, a foreign object struck the plane, causing damage to the cockpit windscreen.

The statement, titled 'Cockpit Windscreen of VP Shettima’s Plane Damaged at JFK Airport, Ministerial Delegation to Represent Nigeria at Samoa Commonwealth Summit,' explained the details of the incident.

“Vice President Kashim Shettima’s trip to Samoa to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been canceled after a foreign object hit his plane during a stopover at JFK Airport in New York,” Onanuga said.

He added that President Tinubu, responding quickly to the situation, approved a ministerial delegation to take over the representation at the summit, while the damaged plane undergoes repairs. The delegation, led by Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal, will now represent Nigeria at the summit in Apia, Samoa.

The summit, which began on October 21, 2024, is scheduled to conclude on October 26.
