Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff, known for leading Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial, has won the California Senate seat, marking a significant victory in one of the country’s most influential Senate races. Schiff’s decisive win over Republican opponent Steve Garvey, a former Major League Baseball player with limited political experience, reflects California's strong Democratic leaning, where registered Democratic voters vastly outnumber Republicans.
In March, Schiff emerged victorious in the primary, defeating more progressive Democrats Barbara Lee, representative for Oakland, and Katie Porter, from a swing district in Orange County. During the primary campaign, Schiff received both support and criticism for his stance on foreign policy, including his strong backing of Israel and refusal to endorse a ceasefire in Gaza, which sparked protests at his victory speech.
Schiff steps into the Senate seat held for 31 years by the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, who passed away at 90. While Senate seats are not lifetime positions, California senators often hold office for extended periods, giving Schiff the opportunity to become a long-term and nationally influential figure within the Democratic Party.
Throughout his campaign, Schiff positioned himself as a centrist Democrat, although his platform included progressive goals such as abolishing the filibuster, expanding the Supreme Court, and eliminating the Electoral College. Confident in his lead, Schiff dedicated time to supporting other Democratic candidates across California and in states like Ohio and Florida.
Garvey’s campaign made a last-minute appeal to Latino voters with Spanish-language ads, but Schiff’s extensive campaign network and substantial fundraising capacity propelled him to a comfortable victory, setting the stage for a new chapter in California’s Senate legacy.
