The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government in Exile has formally reached out to Finland’s President, Alexander Stubb, seeking support for the upcoming Biafra Independence Declaration convention. Ekpa, through a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, announced that a letter of intent was delivered to President Stubb on Monday.
In the letter, Ekpa explained the rationale behind the Biafra declaration, describing it as a pathway to peace for Nigeria and the Sahel region. “The letter of intent urged the Finland President to support the Biafra Independence Declaration, highlighting its potential to bring stability to the Sahel region,” Ekpa wrote on his official X account.
The letter further outlined the mission of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, emphasizing its international legal recognition and commitment to a peaceful referendum. The proposed referendum, set for late November 2024, is intended to legitimize Biafra's independence under international oversight. The letter noted that Biafra had previously been recognized by five United Nations member states, distinguishing it from other secessionist movements in Africa.
The announcement of the independence convention, scheduled for November 29 to December 3, 2024, in Finland, follows years of renewed calls for Biafra's independence. Tensions have been further fueled by the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody since 2021 despite numerous appeals for his release by Igbo leaders.
This latest diplomatic move signals a significant step by the Biafra Republic Government in Exile as it seeks international support for its cause.
