Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa Responds to EFCC Investigation, Dismissing Allegations as Politically Motivated

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has expressed confidence in his tenure, rejecting allegations of financial mismanagement and the alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion as politically driven. Speaking at his Asaba residence during a visit from leaders of Delta North, led by Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, Okowa made it clear that he had "nothing to hide or fear" and would cooperate fully with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Okowa, who has been under investigation by the EFCC, emphasized that the claims against him were part of a media trial orchestrated by his political opponents, particularly due to his support for the current Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori. The former governor reiterated his commitment to defend his record and noted his readiness to face any scrutiny from the anti-graft agency.

During the visit, the group, which included former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue, members of the House of Assembly, and former commissioners, expressed their unwavering support for Okowa’s leadership. They passed a vote of confidence in his administration’s achievements, which they believe positively impacted the state.

However, one notable absence during the meeting was Senator Ned Nwoko, the serving senator representing Delta North, who did not attend the gathering.

The visit comes shortly after Okowa’s release from EFCC custody, where he had been detained for two weeks following accusations of financial mismanagement during his tenure as governor. Since his release, Okowa has received several solidarity visits from various groups and political leaders across the state.
