U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to call President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to formally concede the 2024 presidential race, according to two aides who spoke with NBC News. Harris is also set to address the nation at 4 p.m. ET from Howard University, her alma mater, where she will deliver a concession speech.
President Joe Biden, who backed Harris as the Democratic nominee following his own withdrawal from the race in July, is also expected to call Trump on Wednesday. According to a White House official, Biden's plans include offering Trump a congratulatory call, an invitation to the White House, and an offer to attend Trump’s inauguration—steps that Trump notably declined in 2020 after Biden’s victory.
Trump secured his victory early Wednesday, November 6, with a total of 276 electoral votes, surpassing Harris' 223. He publicly declared his win around 2:30 a.m. ET at an election party in Florida.
Harris, who became the Democratic nominee after Biden, 81, withdrew following a difficult debate against Trump, launched her campaign in July. Concerns over Biden’s age and his ability to serve another term played a role in the Democratic Party’s decision to support Harris. Despite a condensed campaign window of just three months, Harris fought a determined race against Trump, who had launched his re-election bid shortly after the 2022 midterm elections.
Trump’s re-election follows a controversial period in which he was convicted on 34 felony counts related to a New York hush money case and faced scrutiny for his role in the 2020 election aftermath and the January 6 Capitol attack. However, his strong base of support propelled him to victory once again, marking his return to the White House for a second term.
