Prince William recently described the past year as "brutal" and "probably the hardest year" of his life, facing the challenge of both his wife and father’s battles with cancer. Speaking in a video interview marking the end of his visit to Cape Town, South Africa, for the Earthshot Prize awards, William opened up about his family’s struggles.
“It’s honestly been dreadful,” he shared, reflecting on the difficulty of balancing his responsibilities with personal hardships. “It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. Keeping everything on track has been really difficult. But I’m so proud of my wife, and I’m proud of my father for handling everything they’ve gone through. From a family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”
In February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer, and a month later, Princess Catherine disclosed her own diagnosis. In September, the Princess of Wales appeared in a video with her family, marking her return to public life following chemotherapy. Her message about resilience and recovery played over scenes of her family enjoying outdoor activities, where she emphasized her commitment to “staying cancer-free.”
While Catherine has completed treatment, King Charles continues to receive outpatient care for an undisclosed cancer, planning to return to a fuller schedule and more travel next year.
In his candid interview, William also reflected on his evolving role as heir to the throne. He admitted he doesn’t enjoy the additional responsibility but values the freedom to pursue impactful projects like the Earthshot Prize. “Do I like more responsibility? No,” he said. “But do I like the freedom to build something like Earthshot? Absolutely. My platform should be about creating positive change, helping people, and doing something meaningful.”
The Earthshot Prize ceremony, held in an eco-dome on Wednesday, reflected William’s commitment to environmental advocacy. He described the awards as a “movement for change” and encouraged global collaboration to address environmental issues. William highlighted the prize’s role in vetting finalists, attracting companies eager to support innovative solutions. However, he noted that some firms remain hesitant, hoping for “something better” to come along.
Prince William’s remarks reveal both the personal and public challenges he’s faced this past year, balancing his responsibilities as a member of the royal family with his commitment to a healthier planet.
