As the presidential race continues to unfold, all eyes are on Northampton County in Pennsylvania, a key battleground in the Lehigh Valley. In 2016, Donald Trump won the county en route to his victory in Pennsylvania. Four years later, Joe Biden narrowly flipped the county and the state. However, as the latest results come in, Trump is leading Northampton County by more than five points with over 90% of the vote counted.
While this shift is significant, it does not necessarily spell the end for Kamala Harris’ chances in Pennsylvania. A large portion of the remaining votes are still to be counted in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas—regions that traditionally lean Democratic. The outcome in these Democratic strongholds could help offset Trump’s lead in other parts of the state, particularly in areas like Northampton County.
Nonetheless, Harris’ performance in Northampton, along with a drop in her results in Scranton’s Lackawanna County, is raising concerns among Democrats. These trends are not the positive signals that party strategists had hoped for on election night. While the race remains too close to call, the shift in key counties suggests that Pennsylvania may be more competitive than anticipated.
