American Vlogger Abducted and Killed in the Philippines, Body Dumped at Sea

 

An American vlogger, Elliot Eastman, 26, was tragically killed during a botched kidnapping in the Philippines. His body was reportedly discarded at sea after his captors realized he had died from injuries sustained during the abduction.

The incident occurred on October 17 in Sibuco, a poverty-stricken town in Zamboanga del Norte. Four armed men, pretending to be police officers, broke into Eastman's home around 10 PM. When Eastman resisted, he was shot in the leg. The kidnappers then whisked him away on a speedboat, but he succumbed to his injuries during the escape.

Lieutenant Colonel Ramoncelio Sawan, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office in the Zamboanga Peninsula, revealed that initial suspicions of Eastman’s fate were confirmed by a suspect linked to the kidnapping. “The suspect confessed that Elliot was shot and later thrown overboard when the abductors realized he had died,” Sawan stated. The confession has been submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office, which has accepted the case for further investigation.

Authorities have been conducting extensive operations, including confrontations with armed groups on the conflict-ridden Mindanao island, in an attempt to locate Eastman. However, his body has not yet been recovered, and the motive behind the abduction remains unclear.

Former Sibuco Mayor Norbideiri Edding suggested that Eastman may have been targeted due to the perception that he was a wealthy foreigner. Eastman’s marriage to a local Muslim woman, Karisha Jala, may have also played a role in the kidnappers’ motivations.

Eastman had expressed concerns about his safety in the region during a Facebook livestream on September 22, weeks before the kidnapping. Referring to his location as "the most dangerous area in the country," he said, “As long as I’m here, my life is still at risk.”

When police arrived at the scene an hour after the abduction, they found bloodstains on the floor, believed to be from Eastman’s gunshot wound, alongside an empty M16 rifle cartridge and personal items.

Eastman had lived in the region for five months and was reportedly facing financial difficulties after being scammed by a previous partner. His family has been informed of the incident through the U.S. Embassy.

Authorities continue their search for Eastman’s remains and are working to bring those responsible for the crime to justice.
