Biden Lights Final Christmas Tree at the White House, Reflects on Liberty and Compassion

On Thursday evening, President Joe Biden hosted his final Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the White House, offering a heartfelt message of hope and unity. As he addressed the gathered crowd, bundled up against the cold, Biden expressed his wish for the nation: “May we continue to seek the light of liberty and love, kindness and compassion, dignity and decency.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were present for the event, which took place on the Ellipse, just beyond the White House South Lawn. The 30-foot red spruce, which was brought to Washington, D.C. from Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Grayson County, Virginia, had been on display since November 15. It lit up the chilly evening sky with its vibrant green glow, a symbol of the holiday season.

The first lady, Jill Biden, had decorated the White House with festive touches meant to evoke "peace and light." Though she was absent due to her travel to Doha, Qatar, to discuss her initiative on women's health, President Biden took charge of the ceremony. After a countdown, the tree illuminated, and he greeted the crowd with a cheerful "Merry Christmas."

Biden reflected on the season's theme, emphasizing the importance of pausing to appreciate the blessings of life and the light of togetherness. “This is a time when we reflect on the peace we feel as we gather with loved ones and cherish our time together,” he said.

The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is a cherished White House tradition, and this year’s event included musical performances by notable artists such as Trombone Shorty and Trisha Yearwood. The White House grounds were adorned with whimsical decorations, including a carousel, brass bells, and sleigh bells, creating a festive atmosphere for all in attendance.

This year’s main tree came from a farm in Newland, North Carolina, where Hurricane Helene caused significant damage earlier in the year. The Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm, which had been a staple for decades, lost thousands of trees due to a mudslide. Despite the challenges, the farm’s resilience brought this year’s tree to the White House.

As President Biden presided over this holiday event, it marked not only a time of celebration but also an opportunity for reflection on the values that bind the nation together during the festive season.
