A chaotic scene unfolded in Killeen, Texas, on Saturday when a motorist fleeing law enforcement drove a pickup truck into a crowded JCPenney store, injuring five people before being fatally shot by police.
The driver, identified as 53-year-old John Darrel Schultz of Kempner, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident began in Belton, approximately 20 miles away, following reports of Schultz driving erratically in a black pickup truck, according to Ofelia Miramontez of the Killeen Police Department.
The crash left five people injured, ranging in age from six to 75 years old. Four of the victims were transported to local hospitals, while the fifth sought medical care independently, Sgt. Bryan Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety reported. The conditions of the injured were not immediately disclosed.
The vehicle plowed into the busy shopping center, causing panic among shoppers and employees. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and secure the area.
The incident originated in Belton, where authorities received calls about a driver behaving erratically. Schultz then fled toward Killeen, leading to a high-speed chase that culminated in the JCPenney crash. Law enforcement engaged with the driver at the scene, and Schultz was fatally shot during the confrontation.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash, including the driver’s motive and the events that escalated the pursuit. Police have not released further details regarding the confrontation that ended in Schultz’s death.
