Governor Phil Murphy Urges Biden Administration to Investigate Mysterious Drone Sightings in New Jersey

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has called on President Joe Biden to take decisive action in investigating a surge in mysterious drone sightings over the state. These incidents have raised alarms among local officials and residents, with growing concerns about potential threats to public safety and critical infrastructure.

In a letter released on Friday, Murphy expressed frustration over the federal government’s response, urging the Biden administration to allocate more resources to uncover the origins of the drones. The drones, described in some cases as car-sized and operating in groups, have been reported over sensitive locations, including military installations, power plants, and reservoirs.

“It is clear that more comprehensive federal coordination is needed to address this ongoing activity,” Murphy wrote, referencing recent breaches, including sightings at the Naval Weapons Station Earle in Monmouth County.

The Pentagon and FBI have ruled out foreign involvement or military activity behind the drone sightings. John Kirby, a national security spokesman for the Biden administration, said there is currently no evidence linking the incidents to hostile foreign actors.

“Analysis of imagery and advanced detection technologies indicates that many reported sightings were actually manned aircraft operating lawfully,” Kirby stated. However, he acknowledged gaps in current detection and tracking capabilities, which have fueled public skepticism.

A joint statement by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security also noted that no malicious activity or intent has been identified, but admitted that the incidents highlight the "insufficiency of current authorities" to manage such occurrences.

Despite federal reassurances, local and state officials remain unconvinced. Governor Murphy emphasized the need for transparency, noting that nearly 50 drone sightings were reported in a single evening last week. Similarly, New Jersey Senator Andy Kim shared a video on social media showing clusters of unidentified aerial objects moving erratically and at high speed, claiming they did not appear on regular flight trackers.

Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew has raised concerns about potential links to foreign adversaries, such as Iran, warning of national security implications.

Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan also reported witnessing large drones above his residence, adding his voice to the growing chorus demanding government accountability. "The lack of transparency and dismissive attitude from federal agencies is unacceptable," Hogan said.

The mysterious drone activity has extended beyond New Jersey, with sightings reported in parts of New York and Maryland. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has echoed federal officials, asserting that there is “no evidence of a public safety or national security threat.” However, Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella criticized the federal response, comparing it to the heightened vigilance expected post-9/11.

“What if these drones were spotted over the White House or the Capitol? The response would be immediate,” Fossella said. “Our communities deserve the same level of urgency.”

As sightings continue to generate public anxiety, Murphy’s appeal underscores the need for stronger federal coordination. The governor and other regional leaders insist on clear answers to ensure public safety and prevent potential vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.

With residents demanding transparency and heightened vigilance, the Biden administration faces mounting pressure to address this perplexing phenomenon comprehensively.
