Senate Orders Investigation into FCT Demolitions and Summons Julius Berger MD

The Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation into recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following concerns raised by Senator Ireti Kingibe of the FCT Senatorial District. The motion condemned the illegal demolition of structures in Abuja, calling for an immediate halt to further actions that have displaced many residents.

The Senate resolved to set up an investigative committee to probe the demolitions and report its findings within a specified timeframe. Additionally, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has been summoned to explain the rationale behind the demolition exercise.

In a related development, the Senate has expressed dissatisfaction with Julius Berger Nigeria PLC for failing to respond to invitations regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project, a vital transportation route connecting Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. Senator Osita Ngwu, who sponsored the motion, highlighted that the company had received over ₦18 billion in public funds but failed to provide accountability or progress details.

The Senate described Julius Berger's refusal to honour lawful invitations as contemptuous of the National Assembly, undermining its constitutional authority. In response, the upper chamber invoked its powers to issue a warrant of arrest for the company’s Managing Director, compelling their attendance at a rescheduled investigative hearing.

The Odukpani-Itu Highway project is critical for fostering economic activities in Nigeria's South-South region, and the Senate's actions reflect its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in its execution.
