Shehu Sani Calls for Restraint Amid Rising Tension at Kano Emir’s Palace

Tensions escalated at the Kano Emir’s palace on Friday morning as police officers in advanced tactical gear surrounded the historic site. The standoff, which began around 6 a.m., is believed to be linked to plans by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to appoint a district head for Bichi town.

Amid the unrest, former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani weighed in on the situation, urging caution in handling the matter. In a post on X, he wrote, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”

The tension stems from a protracted conflict over the Kano emirship, a position of significant cultural and political influence in the state. In May, former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero was dethroned by Governor Abba Yusuf while he was out of the state. Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano and subsequently moved to the Kofar Kudu palace.

Upon his return, Bayero took up residence at the Nassarawa mini palace, sparking legal disputes both in favor of and against the state government’s decision. The legal wrangling and competing claims to the emirship have kept the issue in the spotlight.

Sani’s call for restraint highlights concerns that the use of force could worsen the situation. His statement reflects a growing demand for dialogue and peaceful resolution to the long-standing dispute.

The Kano emirship holds deep historical and cultural significance, and its leadership remains a sensitive issue for both the people and the state government. The latest developments suggest that tensions are far from settled, with stakeholders urging restraint to avoid further conflict.

The situation continues to unfold, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution that respects the traditions and legal frameworks surrounding the emirship.
