Trump Nominates Kevin Marino Cabrera as U.S. Ambassador to Panama

President-elect Donald Trump has announced Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera as his nominee for U.S. ambassador to Panama. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Cabrera as “a fierce fighter for America First principles” and highlighted his contributions to economic growth and international relations.

“Few understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin,” Trump wrote. “He will do a FANTASTIC job representing our Nation’s interests in Panama!”

The nomination comes amid Trump’s escalating rhetoric surrounding U.S. relations with Panama, particularly regarding the Panama Canal. Trump has repeatedly suggested reasserting U.S. control over the canal, which was administered by the U.S. until its transfer to Panama in 1999.

In a recent Truth Social post, Trump accused Panama of exploiting the canal’s operations, stating that the country was “ripping us off … far beyond their wildest dreams.” He further alleged that Chinese military personnel were illegally involved in the canal’s management, a claim strongly denied by Panamanian officials.

Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, has rejected Trump’s accusations, reiterating that China has no administrative role in the canal’s operations. While Chinese interests manage two ports near the canal’s entrances under a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings, the canal itself remains under Panamanian control.

Trump’s claims have raised questions about his administration’s future approach to U.S.-Panama relations, with critics suggesting his rhetoric could strain diplomatic ties.

As ambassador, Cabrera will be tasked with navigating these tensions while representing U.S. interests in the region. Known for his strong advocacy of Trump’s “America First” agenda, Cabrera’s appointment signals a potentially assertive stance on trade and regional partnerships.

Observers say Cabrera’s deep understanding of Latin American politics and his economic expertise may prove valuable in addressing the complex dynamics between the U.S., Panama, and other regional players.

The nomination now awaits Senate confirmation, with many watching closely to see how Cabrera will balance Trump’s bold foreign policy ambitions with the need to maintain stable U.S.-Panama relations.
