Weinstein’s Legal Team Alleges Deliberate Mistreatment in Prison, Files $5M Claim

Harvey Weinstein's lawyers have accused New York City prison authorities of subjecting the disgraced former movie mogul to inhumane conditions at Rikers Island. Weinstein has been incarcerated there since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned on appeal. His legal team claims the treatment he has endured is so severe that they fear for his life.

Weinstein’s attorneys allege he has been forced to endure appalling conditions, including wearing blood-stained clothing, going weeks without clean underwear, and being exposed to freezing temperatures. Additionally, they claim he has been denied essential cancer medications, exacerbating his declining health.

Imran H. Ansari, a member of Weinstein’s legal team, expressed deep concerns about the facility’s management. “It’s like stepping into a gulag where inmates are treated like animals, not a facility managed in accordance with constitutional standards,” Ansari said.

Weinstein’s health has deteriorated significantly during his incarceration. Diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, he was hospitalized in October after a blood test revealed dangerously low white blood cell counts, heightening his risk of infection. His lawyers have repeatedly requested that he be moved to a medical facility for full-time care.

In response to Weinstein’s alleged mistreatment, his legal team has filed a $5 million lawsuit against New York City, accusing officials of negligence and failing to provide adequate medical care.

“We believe this mistreatment is deliberate,” said Ansari, adding that Weinstein’s current conditions could lead to his death.

Weinstein, once a Hollywood power broker, now relies on a wheelchair during court appearances. His retrial for the rape charges linked to his overturned conviction is scheduled for 2025.

Rikers Island, notorious for its troubled history of inmate abuse and poor conditions, is set to close in 2027. However, delays in the closure timeline have raised questions about the future of the facility and the welfare of its inmates.

Weinstein's legal battle underscores broader concerns about the treatment of prisoners at Rikers and whether the facility operates within constitutional standards.
