A Nigerian soldier has openly criticized the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, following the recent denial of his Canadian visa. The soldier, who chose to remain anonymous, accused the CDS and other senior military officials of corruption, neglecting wounded soldiers, and failing to provide adequate welfare for military personnel.
In a video statement, the soldier expressed frustration over what he perceived as deliberate sabotage of the military’s efforts against terrorism. He alleged that high-ranking officers prioritize personal gain while abandoning injured soldiers, leaving them to finance their own medical treatment despite being wounded in service to the country.
Speaking in Pidgin English, the soldier questioned the CDS, asking whether he was unaware of foreign sponsorship of terrorist groups. He claimed that if the visa had been granted, the public would not have been made aware of how certain nations allegedly support terrorism. He attributed the visa denial to divine intervention, suggesting that it exposed hidden agendas.
The soldier further criticized Nigerians for their silence on these issues, expressing disappointment that even his fellow lower-ranking soldiers condemned him for speaking out. He acknowledged the risks of his statements, stating that he was prepared for any consequences, including arrest.
Highlighting the dire conditions of wounded soldiers, he urged others to visit military hospitals, particularly the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna and the 7 Division hospital, to witness firsthand the suffering of soldiers left without proper care. He emphasized that many of these soldiers have been abandoned by the government despite their sacrifices.
He warned his colleagues that the military has no long-term plans for lower-ranking soldiers, especially those nearing retirement. He insisted that numerous injured soldiers are forced to pay for their own medical treatment and questioned why the government had failed to support them.
Expressing his willingness to face dismissal rather than endure neglect, he stated that he was unafraid of the consequences. He referenced past incidents where outspoken soldiers were allegedly silenced, recalling the case of a naval officer who was dismissed for alleged disobedience. He suggested that authorities might attempt to suppress him in a similar manner.
Despite acknowledging the likelihood of being arrested for his statements, the soldier maintained that he had no regrets. He expressed pride in speaking the truth, even if it cost him his career or life.
