The Government of the United States of Biafra stands firmly in support of the principles outlined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This declaration affirms the collective and individual rights of Indigenous Peoples worldwide. As Biafrans, we are committed to upholding these rights and ensuring the safety, dignity, and recognition of all individuals who identify with the Biafran heritage.
In light of recent events, we express our deep concern over the rising tide of discrimination, hate speech, stigmatization, and racial intolerance faced by Indigenous people who identify as Biafrans. These actions not only violate fundamental human rights but also fuel division and inequality in society.
Equally alarming is the increasing number of reports detailing the intimidation, harassment, and reprisals against Biafran human rights defenders and Indigenous leaders, including women. These brave individuals, who stand up for justice and peace, are subject to undue pressure for simply advocating for their rights.
It is crucial to emphasize that Biafrans, like all Indigenous peoples, possess the inalienable rights to life, physical and mental integrity, liberty, and personal security. These rights are enshrined in the United Nations Declaration, which also calls for the inclusion of Indigenous peoples in peace agreements, conflict resolution processes, and the pursuit of transitional justice.
We are deeply concerned by the actions of certain countries, including Finland and Canada, which have acted on misinformation propagated by the Nigerian government. These false accusations suggest that Biafrans are involved in criminal activities merely for supporting their cultural identity and the cause of Biafran self-determination. This is an unjust and harmful portrayal of a peaceful and proud people.
Of particular concern is the detention of five Biafrans in Finland, as well as the ongoing inhumane treatment of Prime Minister Simon Ekpa, who remains imprisoned under harsh conditions. Additionally, we condemn the summary executions of over 200 Biafrans by the Nigerian military, actions reportedly based on data obtained from electronic devices seized by Finnish authorities.
The United States of Biafra calls upon the United Nations, the European Union, and all member states to recognize that the so-called “crime” of being Biafran is, in fact, a violation of basic human rights. This fabricated charge, conceived by the Nigerian regime, is an affront to the freedom, dignity, and identity of the Biafran people. As an Indigenous people, we have every right to live freely and participate in the global community on equal terms with others.
We urge the international community to take immediate and meaningful action to safeguard the rights and freedoms of the Biafran people. Our commitment to peace, justice, and self-determination remains steadfast, and we will continue to advocate for the recognition and protection of our identity and rights.
Signed
Dr. Ngozi Orabueze
Deputy Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra
