Former President Donald Trump inaccurately claimed that the United States has contributed significantly more financial aid to Ukraine than European countries. Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, Trump asserted that the U.S. had provided over $300 billion in aid, while European nations had contributed approximately $100 billion. He suggested that this disparity should be addressed.
During their Oval Office meeting earlier that day, Macron interjected to clarify the nature of Europe’s support for Ukraine.
Data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which monitors aid to Ukraine, indicates that the European Union and individual European nations had collectively committed approximately $258 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian assistance by December, surpassing the U.S. commitment of around $124 billion.
Europe had also allocated roughly $138 billion in aid, compared to $119 billion from the U.S. While the U.S. held a slight lead in allocated military assistance—about $67 billion versus Europe’s $65 billion—it was far from the significant gap Trump suggested.
