I recently learned about a significant breakthrough in the Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, where community members have come together to secure peace after years of conflict. In a heartfelt effort to restore calm and security, local residents, community leaders, and even members of the armed groups met at a reconciliation session held in Kwari village on February 28, 2025.
At the meeting—organized by a dedicated local forum led by Alhaji Gide Dahiru—the armed group took a surprising step by handing over two AK-47 rifles and admitting that they had abducted ten individuals from Daddara town. Thankfully, these victims have now been released and are receiving proper care at the General Hospital in Jibia.
A respected security analyst, known for his expertise in counter-insurgency in the Lake Chad region, explained that the gathering was bolstered by the presence of influential community figures. Among them were Alhaji Sama’ila Mai Maasara, Chairman of the local Business Association, and elder statesman Alhaji Haruna Sada Zare, whose involvement added both authority and hope to the proceedings.
One of the highlights of the session was the guidance offered by Sheikh Barrister Ibrahim Sabi’u—a former secretary of the Islamic Justice Commission and a judge in the state’s reconciliation court. He stressed that the negotiations were rooted in Islamic law, a framework that many believe will help pave the way for enduring peace.
Even some of the most notorious figures among the armed groups, including leaders like Audu Lankai and Tukur Nigerian, were present and engaged in the process. Their participation marked a turning point, as community members made clear their demands: an immediate end to the attacks on Jibia town and its surroundings, robust protection for farmers, and a decisive halt to cattle rustling and other criminal activities.
Adding to this optimistic development, a local resident, Alhaji Babangida Bracket from Daddara, confirmed the safe return of the abducted individuals. His assurance signals a hopeful new chapter in the ongoing efforts to restore security and trust in the region.
This personal account reflects the deep commitment of local people to reclaim peace and build a safer future together.
