Former First Lady Michelle Obama made headlines Tuesday night after joking about former President Donald Trump’s controversial renovation of the White House during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
During the Nov. 4 episode, Colbert referenced the East Wing, which the Trump administration recently demolished to make way for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom. Obama quipped, “Remember that?” — a remark that drew loud laughter and applause from the studio audience. Colbert responded with a grin, saying, “Vaguely.”
The lighthearted moment turned serious as Obama criticized the decision to remove an entire wing of the historic building. “That house is not our house,” she said. “I never viewed it—we never viewed it—as our house. We were there for a time. We had a job to do. We always felt it was the people’s house.”
Obama, 61, went on to describe the East Wing’s historical and personal importance, noting that it traditionally served as the first lady’s office and a space for family life. “That’s where life happened,” she said. “The West Wing was work — sometimes sadness, sometimes problems. It was the guts of the White House. The East Wing was where you felt light.”
The new ballroom project, authorized during Trump’s second term, is expected to be completed before the end of his presidency in 2029. According to the administration, the ballroom will host official state events and public ceremonies.
