American singer-songwriter Brittany Porter, known by her stage name Brook Lynn, says she is seeking a “proper divorce” after realizing she was legally married to Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, the former King of Malaysia, in a ceremony she believed was only an engagement celebration.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Porter, 30, said she met the 56-year-old royal in January 2024 through mutual friends. “We had instant chemistry,” she said, describing him as charming with a “cute British accent.”
Their relationship quickly became serious, marked by lavish travel and expensive gifts. “He flew me and my friends around the world — the nicest hotels, the best treatment,” Porter recalled. “He probably spent millions on our trips.”
A Surprise “Marriage”
Porter said that before a trip to Oman last April, the Sultan proposed to her and presented a blue diamond ring to match her eyes. She thought they were only celebrating their engagement when he later arranged a religious ceremony involving an imam and her close friends.
“In my culture, a big ceremony is the wedding, which we planned for January 2025,” Porter said. “I didn’t know a nikah was a marriage under Islamic law.”
On social media, she later clarified: “In Western culture, the ceremony itself is the wedding, so I didn’t realize how different the process would be. But in his faith, I was — and still am — his wife in the eyes of Allah.”
Relationship Breakdown
Porter said that after returning to Malaysia, she was expected to have a male heir. She became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage. “It was horrible,” she told the Daily Mail. “After that, we just started fighting a lot.”
While planning their official wedding in California, she said the Sultan grew distant. “I flew back to Malaysia — but he wasn’t there,” Porter said. “He blocked me on everything and just texted my best friend saying it wasn’t going to work out.”
She said she hasn’t heard from him since and is now seeking a formal divorce. “I fell for his trap,” Porter said. “I feel like this is a pattern for him.”
A Familiar Royal History
Sultan Muhammad V has ruled as the 29th Sultan of Kelantan since 2010 and previously served as Malaysia’s king from 2016 to 2019, before abdicating the throne.
He has been married several times, including to Tengku Zubaidah binti Tengku Norudin (2004–2008), Sultanah Nur Diana Petra (since 2010), and Russian beauty queen Oxana Voevodina (2018–2019), with whom he shares a son.
Turning Pain Into Art
Despite the turmoil, Porter says the experience inspired her music. Her debut single, “Oh My Gosh,” was released recently.
“It’s been a healing journey,” she said. “I’m grateful for everything that happened — the songs are about him.”
