Vanessa Williams Reveals Quiet Divorce from Husband Jim Skrip After Nearly Six Years of Marriage

Actress and singer Vanessa Williams has revealed that she quietly divorced her husband, businessman Jim Skrip, in 2021 — managing to keep the split entirely out of the public eye for nearly four years.

In a new PEOPLE cover story, Williams, 61, confirmed that her marriage to Skrip ended amicably after nearly six years together. The pair first met while vacationing in Egypt and married in July 2015 in Buffalo, New York.

“I’m doing what I love, and I’m in love with life,” Williams told PEOPLE. “There is not one person that I’m in love with, but I’m in love with everybody.”

Their romance began with a storybook start. The couple celebrated their first wedding in an elaborate Egyptian-themed ceremony at St. Stanislaus Church and Statler City, honoring the place where they met. Less than a year later, they held a second, more intimate Catholic ceremony at Williams’ home church.

Back in 2015, Williams described her then-husband as “a real man” with integrity and confidence. “He’s romantic and he’s a great guy,” she said at the time.

Williams has been married twice before. She wed her first husband, Ramon Hervey II, in 1987, and the couple had three children — Melanie, Jillian, and Devin — before divorcing in 1997. Her second marriage, to former NBA player Rick Fox, lasted from 1999 to 2004, and they share a daughter, Sasha.

Now single and embracing a new chapter, Williams says she is relishing her independence. “I love my freedom,” she said. “I love being alive, having options in my life, and being surrounded by beautiful things, great people, and wonderful opportunities.”
