Senior Russian Military Officer Dies in Vehicle Blast Near Moscow

A senior Russian military officer was killed early Monday when an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle in Moscow, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s operational training directorate, died after an explosion occurred shortly after he began his commute to work at approximately 7 a.m. local time. Russian authorities said the device had been attached to the underside of his vehicle, which was parked near his residential building in southern Moscow.

Investigators said witnesses are being questioned and surveillance footage from the surrounding area is under review as part of an ongoing criminal inquiry. Russian officials have not yet announced any arrests.

Sarvarov, 56, was a career military officer who served in several conflicts over the course of his career, including operations in the North Caucasus and later in Syria. He held a senior role within Russia’s military command structure at the time of his death.

Russian investigators said they are examining the possibility of foreign involvement in the incident, including a potential link to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the allegation.

The killing follows a series of high-profile attacks targeting Russian military figures since the start of the war in Ukraine. In previous cases, Russian and Western officials have attributed some incidents to Ukrainian security services, though not all claims have been independently confirmed.

Ukraine has previously acknowledged conducting targeted operations against Russian military assets as part of its broader defense strategy. These efforts have included strikes on military infrastructure and operations attributed to Ukraine’s security and intelligence agencies. Ukrainian officials have said such actions are intended to counter Russia’s military capabilities.

The incident is expected to prompt heightened security reviews for senior officials in Moscow as investigations continue.
