Missouri President Step Down Amid Racial Discrimination

The president of the University of Missouri, Tim Wolfe has resign today Monday amid escalating protest over racial bias and unfair treatment in the school system.

Students protest in number and ask for the resignation of the president, the football team even threaten to boycott today came which would have cost the school over a million dollars.

Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin — who oversees the university’s main campus in Columbia, Mo. — will also step down, the university system’s governing body, the Board of Curators announced Monday evening. Loftin plans to leave his position at the end of the year and move to a new role within the university as director for research facility development.

“My motivation in making this decision comes from love,” Wolfe said. “I love MU, Columbia where I grew up, the state of Missouri.” But after thinking over the situation, he said, he concluded that resigning “is the right thing to do.”

The announcements came in the midst of a heated national debate over race, one that has caused tension on many of the nation’s college campuses this year. Wolfe’s decision was decried by some who were shocked that a system president could be forced out by protesters focused on a single issue. But it was cheered by many students on campus Monday and applauded by Missouri’s governor.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest praised the protesters. They showed that “a few people standing up and speaking out can have a profound impact on the places where we live and work,” Earnest said. It would require continued “hard work” on the part of students and administrators to ensure progress continued, he said, and he noted that similar debates are taking place at other campuses, such as recent protests at Yale University.
