In a defensive and somewhat evasive statement, Vice-President-Elect Kashim Shettima addressed the mounting accusations of an Islamization agenda attributed to him and his running mate, Bola Tinubu. Shettima, appearing uncomfortable, sought to dismiss the claims while attempting to highlight his commitment to inclusivity within Nigerian politics.
Controversy erupted when Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and a Muslim, chose Shettima, also a Muslim, as his running mate, creating a Muslim-Muslim ticket. This decision raised eyebrows among Nigerian Christians, especially in light of the relentless attacks on Christian communities and churches in Northern Nigeria by Islamic terrorists. Concerns quickly arose, with many suspecting that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was an intentional step towards Islamizing the nation.
However, during a hastily arranged lecture in Abuja, serving as part of the events surrounding Tinubu's upcoming inauguration, Shettima made feeble attempts to deny any plans of Islamizing Nigeria. Understanding the power of optics in politics, Shettima clumsily stressed the importance of perception. To deflect from the contentious ticket selection, he revealed his decision to appoint an Igbo man, a Catholic, as his Chief Security Officer. However, this gesture seemed more like a desperate attempt to salvage his tarnished image than a genuine commitment to inclusivity.
Adding fuel to the skepticism, Shettima proudly announced that he had chosen a Northern Christian as his ADC, responsible for his personal security. While this might have seemed like an attempt to counter the allegations, it only served to raise further eyebrows.
