16-Year-Old Boy Swept Away by Flood in Ijebu-Ode

A 16-year-old boy named Dimeji was tragically swept away by a flood on Friday near St Anthony Secondary School in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode.

Dimeji, an apprentice barber in the Awokoya area, accidentally stepped into a flooded canal, mistaking it for a plank usually used to cross over. He had recently celebrated finishing his secondary education at Ansar-u-Deen Secondary School, Ijebu Ode.

A viral video accompanied by a condolence message on Saturday showed the retrieval of the young boy's body from the gully. The message read:

"With a heavy heart, we share the sorrowful news of a young life lost to the devastating erosion in Ijebu Ode this evening. The victim, an apprentice barber at Awokoya, has been confirmed to be a non-student. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, including his mother, who sells 'fufu' at the same location. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in this difficult time."

An anonymous source explained: "Yes, what you saw in the video is true. The boy, Dimeji, actually slipped into the canal. He escorted his friend to take a motorcycle, and after the friend left, he mistakenly stepped into the water, thinking he was stepping on the plank, and that’s how he was swept away."

When contacted for comment on the incident, SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, stated she was not aware of the incident.
