Actor Wendell Pierce speaks out against housing discrimination in Harlem, alleging denial of rental apartment due to race

Wendell Pierce, the Tony award-winning actor known for his roles in "The Wire" and "Jack Ryan," recently shared his experience of alleged housing discrimination in Harlem, New York. Pierce, 58, took to social media to express his frustration, stating, “Racism and bigotry are real.” Despite his notable career achievements, including roles in TV series and on Broadway, Pierce claimed that a white apartment owner rejected his application, citing concerns about his employment stability as an actor.

In an interview with CNN, Pierce elaborated on the incident, highlighting his efforts to support a relative in finding an apartment. Despite offering to pay a year's rent in advance, he was denied on the grounds of perceived employment inconsistency. Pierce suggested that the application process seemed designed to discriminate against him, emphasizing the detrimental effects of institutionalized bigotry.

Pierce emphasized that he shared his experience to shed light on the pervasive nature of discrimination, rather than seeking personal attention. His remarks come amid ongoing efforts in New York to combat housing discrimination, with Governor Kathy Hochul reaffirming the state's commitment to addressing bias in housing.

The actor's disclosure prompted reactions online, with many expressing sympathy for his situation and frustration with systemic inequalities. Pierce, a native of New Orleans, has been recognized for his contributions to both theater and television, winning a Tony award for theatrical production and receiving nominations for his performances in acclaimed plays.
