Album Review: Tems' "Born in the Wild" - Elevating Afrobeats with Swagger

Temilade Openiyi, hailing from Lagos, has been on a meteoric rise from local sensation to global contender in just three years. With her debut album "Born in the Wild," the singer-songwriter-producer showcases her talent with 18 tracks packed with swagger and a hint of guest appearances from Asake and J Cole. Despite its slightly lengthy runtime, the album delivers on Tems' initial promise as a profound lyricist, maintaining her distinct Nigerian aesthetic while seamlessly blending into the realms of US soul and R&B.

Divided between themes of relationships and personal empowerment, "Born in the Wild" offers glimpses into Tems' journey, including pep talks from her mother and managers. Tracks like "Unfortunate" and "Boy O Boy" serve as poignant reflections on failed relationships, while the standout bangers steal the show. "Wickedest," with its bold sampling of Magic System's 1999 hit "1er Gaou," exudes confidence, while "Turn Me Up" hints at a future chart-topper, signaling Tems' undeniable growth and sophistication as an artist.
