Aisha Yesufu: Obidient Movement Originated from EndSARS Protests, Not Created by Peter Obi

Aisha Yesufu, a member of the Labour Party's 2023 presidential campaign team, stated that Peter Obi, the party’s candidate in the last general election, did not create the Obidient movement.

Yesufu explained that the Obidient movement emerged as a result of the widespread anger following the EndSARS protests and killings. She emphasized that the collective frustration of Nigerian youths led to the formation of the movement, from which Obi benefited.

Posting on X, Yesufu wrote: “Nobody created the Obidient movement. After the #EndSARS killings by the APC government, many people became interested in politics because they were mocked and told to vote out those who killed the protesters. There was a collective anger to vote out APC. Peter Obi was a beneficiary of that collective anger of the people.

“When he announced his presidential candidacy, many who felt that collective anger supported him, and the name was coined to reflect the candidate, following the Nigerian tradition of naming supporters after the person they back. The movement existed before the name Obidient was coined.”
