The South-South coordinator of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governor Bassey Otu, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has tasked him with the responsibility of reclaiming Edo State from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Otu, who presided over the APC South-South conference in Calabar, the Cross River capital, emphasized his commitment to fulfilling the President's directive. He acknowledged feeling isolated as the lone APC governor in the region but expressed optimism that another APC governor would join him in Edo State by September 2024.
"In line with the vision of our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the leadership of our great party, I have been charged with expanding our presence in the South-South region. It is imperative that we heed Mr. President's call to strengthen our political foothold in Edo State," Otu stated.
He confidently asserted that Edo State would not evade the concerted efforts of the APC, citing successful strategies employed in other states like Imo. Otu also took a swipe at the PDP, reminiscing about their dominance in Cross River State, which has now been upended by the opposition's triumph.
"Today, we witness the fruits of our labor as people across Cross River State experience newfound freedom. Despite challenges, we are progressing towards a brighter future," Otu affirmed.
In addition to rallying APC stakeholders for unity, Otu advocated for equitable distribution of important national appointments to party loyalists in the region. He emphasized the need for rewarding hard work and suggested that states without sitting governors should receive special consideration to bolster their political standing.
"We must strive for unity within our party ranks and ensure that deserving individuals are duly recognized and rewarded. It's time to prioritize the South-South region in national appointments and empower states lacking gubernatorial representation," Otu concluded.
